A bit of history
To understand the origins of pizza, we need to go back thousands of years in the past, as it is not a dish that has only been around for a short while. There are multiple theories about its creation, with opinions varying on whether it comes from Egypt or Greece, but most agree that it emerged in southern Italy approximately 2000 years ago, as a baked flatbread, which is the foundation of what we now call pizza. Although there is no concrete confirmation of this, everyone knows that Italians were the ones who popularized this delicacy that is now enjoyed worldwide, with various ingredients and cooking methods, but always maintaining that special touch that fascinated everyone from the very beginning.
Curiosities
Besides being a delight, pizza has some surprising facts, like this one: did you know Italy is not the country that consumes the most pizza? While it’s its birthplace, the leading consumer of pizza is the United States, where more than 650 million pizzas are eaten annually. Mexico is second, with 120 million.
Another interesting fact is that the most renowned types of pizza are Neapolitan and Carbonara, while the least consumed is Hawaiian, because it includes pineapple among its ingredients. However, that doesn’t stop a certain group of people from considering it their favorite.
And finally, how many types of pizza have you tried in your lifetime? Even if your answer is “many,” you probably haven’t tried all the existing ones, as there are over 150,000 different types worldwide. Amazing!
